Notre Dame Football Stadium Wedding Photos | Amie + Mark

I joined Amie and Mark last September for their official wedding ceremony at the Sacred Heart Basilica at the University of Notre Dame before they headed south for their destination wedding later in the fall.  The Notre Dame Football Stadium was at the top of the list for photo locations on campus as Mark was a Fighting Irish football player.  As luck would have it, shortly after the ceremony it started to rain, and not just a few drops but a total downpour.  As such, the usual shots at the stadium were, at least for the majority of our time there, sidetracked and required that we explore some alternate approaches to wedding photos inside the stadium.  This series of photos of the bride and groom set against Touchdown Jesus from inside the gates of the stadium ended up being my personal favorites from the day.  Approaching the gate as an aesthetic layer rather than an architectural obstruction made for a more compelling image with the Hesburgh Library as the backdrop.

I only spent a few hours with Amie and Mark, and, although I usually work with an assistant or second photographer for full-day wedding coverage, between the three of us, we pulled off some really fun shots around campus in a short period of time.  Non-Saturday or off-season weddings can present the opportunity to be more creative with your wedding timeline and use of your photography coverage time.

University of Notre Dame Class of 2029

University of Notre Dame campus visit

My father recently returned to the University of Notre Dame’s marketing department faculty after a more than three decade hiatus.  Last week, my 7 year-old daughter, Sydney, and her cousin/bff, Ellie, had the opportunity to play hooky from second grade and attend their first college class together with Professor Grandpa (as they were instructed to call him).  They took the same quiz as the rest of the class and I’m told that although they did not pass the true/false exam, they did reasonably well for not having attended the first two months of the Principles of Marketing course.  After class, the girls got a personal tour of one of the women’s dormitories courtesy of Maddie and Amelia and were ready to move in; the free chocolate chip cookies may, however, have had some influence on them.

I decided to take the afternoon off, myself, and join the girls and Professor Grandpa for lunch at South Dining Hall.  The afternoon was nostalgic to say the least and reminded me of my many visits as a kid to Notre Dame, the University of Central Florida and Western Michigan University’s campuses to attend class with my dad.  Long before anyone thought up Take Your Daughter to Work Day, I had the very regular experience of attending college with my father, an experience that, as a child, I probably could not appreciate the extent to which it would shape my later ambitions and sense of being able to accomplish anything if I pushed myself hard enough.

I’m sure this is one of many trips Sydney and Ellie will make to Notre Dame.   Their first exposure to college life definitely left a lasting impression.

Tiffany + Jason | Shadowland Ballroom Wedding in St. Joseph, MI

Silver Beach sunset wedding photos

We joined Tiffany and Jason for their Shadowland Pavilion ceremony and reception following at the Shadowland Ballroom in St. Joe, Michigan last month.  What an incredibly fun couple!  They were up for anything including a sunset ballet shoot at Silver Beach.  My job is never boring, but couples like this keep it creatively interesting.Silver Beach sunset wedding photosSt. Joseph Michigan wedding photos - groomsmen shoesSt. Joseph Michigan Tiscornia Lighthouse wedding photosShadowland Ballroom St. Joseph MI wedding photosShadowland Ballroom wedding photosShadowland Ballroom wedding photosShadowland Ballroom wedding picturesSilver Beach wedding sunset wedding photosSilver Beach sunset wedding pictures

St. Joseph Lighthouse Engagement Photos at Tiscornia Beach

We met up with Tiffany and Jason a week or two ago for some quick engagement photos before they tie the knot in St. Joseph this September.  Some light rain pushed through Tiscornia park at the North Pier while we were getting ready and made for a soft, pretty sky and beautifully diffused natural light.  The couple will be saying their I do’s at the Shadowland Pavilion at Silver Beach County Park this fall followed by a celebration at the Shadowland Ballroom and Silver Beach Carousel.

Magnificent Mile | 32nd Floor Observatory Chicago Intercontinental Hotel

I recently stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.  While I’ll be back to the Windy City next weekend for what is sure to be a spectacular celebration at the Chicago Park Hyatt for a wedding, this trip was mostly for pleasure.  While having a little fun shooting reflections in the revolving doors in the lobby one night, the security guard told me about a unique observatory on the 32nd floor of the Intercontinental with expansive views of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue and beyond.  I headed up to the lookout for an incredible perspective of Chicago architecture.  Anyone familiar with my work knows that I adore night photography.  As the temperature dropped and the canopy of the city became engulfed in fog, the view was even more striking.

The Wrigley Building spurred development of the North Michigan Avenue business district.  Most recognized by its clock tower, the building is illuminated by hundreds of lights precisely positioned to create a gradual increase in brightness moving up the building’s facade.

Among the historic landmarks located near the Intercontinental Hotel is the Tribune Tower.  The neo-Gothic building located in the four-hundred block of North Michigan Avenue is home to not only the Chicago Tribune, but also WGN Radio and CNN’s Chicago bureau.  The 36-floor building was completed in 1925.  The gothic buttresses that adorn the top of the building are especially ominous when lit at night.
